Vegan Chicken Fried Steak Recipe


Chicken fried steak is a classic Southern dish that typically consists of a breaded and fried piece of beef steak.   • 4 vegan steak patties
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup plant-based milk (such as almond or soy milk)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil, for frying


  1. In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the plant-based milk and apple cider vinegar. This mixture will act as a vegan buttermilk substitute.
  3. Dip each vegan steak patty into the flour mixture, coating it evenly on both sides.
  4. Next, dip the coated patty into the plant-based milk mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.
  5. Coat the patty with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere the breadcrumbs to the surface.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 for each vegan steak patty.
  7. In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
  8. Carefully place the breaded vegan steak patties into the hot oil and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove the cooked vegan chicken fried steaks from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb any excess oil
