- 2 lbs beef steak (such as ribeye or sirloin)
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions: How to Cook Smothered Steak
- Season the steak generously with salt and pepper on both sides.
- In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Sear the steak for 3-4 minutes on each side until browned. Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.
- Add the remaining butter to the skillet and sauté the onions until they are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and garlic, stirring constantly to make a roux. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the flour is golden brown.
- Slowly whisk in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
- Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and bring the gravy to a simmer.
- Return the steak to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over the top.
- Cover the skillet and simmer on low heat for 45-60 minutes, or until the steak is tender.
- Once the steak is cooked through, remove it from the skillet and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing.
- Serve the smothered steak with the gravy spooned over the top and garnish with chopped parsley.
