Recipe Chicken Handi

Chicken Handi is a popular and flavorful dish from the Indian subcontinent. It is a creamy and rich curry made with tender chicken pieces cooked in a spiced tomato-based gravy. This dish is best enjoyed with naan or rice.

  • 500 grams boneless chicken, cut into pieces
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • 1/2 cup yogurt, whisked
  • 1/4 cup fresh cream
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish


  1. Heat oil in a deep pan or handi over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté for a minute.
  4. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Mix well.
  5. Add tomato puree and cook until the oil separates from the masala.
  6. Add chicken pieces and cook until they are sealed and lightly browned.
  7. Reduce the heat to low and add whisked yogurt. Mix well to coat the chicken.
  8. Cover the pan and let the chicken cook for about 20-25 minutes or until tender.
  9. Once the chicken is cooked, add fresh cream and salt. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  10. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
