Chicken Datshi is a traditional Bhutanese dish that combines tender chicken with a flavorful cheese sauce made from local Bhutanese cheese. This dish is hearty, comforting, and perfect for a cozy meal with family and friends.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 green chili, chopped (optional)
  • 1 cup Bhutanese datshi cheese, crumbled (substitute with feta cheese if unavailable)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions: How to Cook Chicken Datshi

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic, grated ginger, and green chili (if using) to the pan. Cook for another 2 minutes.
  4. Add the chicken pieces to the pan and cook until they are browned on all sides, about 5-6 minutes.
  5. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook until they start to break down, about 5 minutes.
  6. Add the crumbled datshi cheese to the pan along with water. Stir well to combine and let the cheese melt into a creamy sauce.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for another 5-7 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
